Tan Su Lin is a media and communications professional with more than 10 years of experience in broadcast journalism. As CNN’s 2014 Journalism Fellow, she has won numerous awards throughout her career, with environmental and science-related topics as her areas of specialisation. With a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) combined with her experience in journalism, Su Lin co-founded Science Media Centre (SMC) Malaysia in 2020 to champion the importance of effective science communication and evidence-based reporting. SMC is the first information resource centre of its kind in Malaysia to support journalists in reporting complex and controversial science issues that make the headlines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SMC hosted a series of webinars and produced content from science experts to debunk COVID-19 misinformation.
A Chevening scholar 2018/2019 alumni, Su Lin recently led a COVID-19 risks and prevention awareness project in collaboration with Global Peace Malaysia to educate the Orang Asli community in Kampung Binjai, Pahang. In 2020, Su Lin was awarded a Diverse Voices grant with Projek Dialog to produce a 2-part video-essay series published on Astro Awani to highlight the plight of the indigenous community in Kuala Langat, Selangor and their fight against climate change. Su Lin is currently attached with WWF-Malaysia, an environmental non-profit organisation.
